We take our name from the South Bastion of Gibraltar. Raised by Spanish military engineers around 1540 and later strengthened by the British, it anchored the southern end of the town's sea defences and, with the neighbouring Flat Bastion, guarded the Southport Gate.
A bastion's angled walls let its defenders cover every approach. Nearly five centuries on, it still stands. That is the standard we hold ourselves to: every position guarded, every thesis tested from every angle, and capital built to endure.
Auckland has a defensive heritage of its own. Fort Britomart, one of New Zealand’s first British fortifications, once stood on a headland above the harbour. The headland is long gone, but its name still marks the heart of the city. Gibraltar gave us our name; Auckland is our home.
